P224D: Alternative Fuel Tank Shutoff Valve A Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off

P224D means tank shutoff valve A is electrically switched but the system behaves as if it stayed shut. Software can only infer that from a pressure response: once the valve is commanded open, line or rail pressure should climb toward the regulated value, which GM gives as 468-896 kPa for the bi-fuel Impala and Ford as about 724 kPa for its 2003 CNG trucks. Ford's control module also closes the tank valve itself if gas pressure sinks under 517 kPa. No maker documents P224D publicly; some code lists call it Range/Performance instead of Stuck Off. Possible reasons are a seized plunger, a closed manual tank valve or an empty tank. Bi-fuel vehicles return to gasoline, dedicated ones lose power or stall.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If you smell gas, do not keep driving or start the engine: move away and call for assistance. With no smell, drive moderately to an authorized shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Engine switches back to gasoline or will not run on gas
  • Gas fuel gauge shows content although no gas is delivered

Most likely causes

  • Manual tank valve closed or tank nearly empty
  • Valve plunger stuck closed, e.g. by contamination
  • Supply voltage too low to pull the solenoid open
  • Faulty gas pressure sensor misreporting the response

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P224D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 4D: Specific fault in that system
