P227F: Air Flow Restriction/Air Leak Between Air Filter and MAF (Bank 2)

P227F means the passage between the air filter and the mass air flow sensor of bank 2 is restricted or lets air in that has bypassed the filter. By today's wording the code belongs to engines with a separate air path and MAF per bank; P2280 is the bank 1 version. FCA nevertheless sets P227F on Ram 2500 and 5500 heavy-duty trucks: STAR case S2218000013 (2022) reports it together with a prompt to service the air filter, sometimes alongside P0299 or P226C, on vehicles below 3,000 miles. The reason was factory filters whose paper media carried too much oil; a fresh filter is the first step. On the same trucks FCA treats the bank 1 sibling P2280 as a two-trip fault. A restricted filter starves the engine of air, so boost and power fall, and diesels may smoke more.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can drive in moderation. If the engine goes into limp mode, go to a repair shop without passing other vehicles or demanding power.

Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.

Symptoms

  • MIL on, on some trucks with an air filter service message
  • Reduced power and boost under load
  • More black smoke on diesel engines

Most likely causes

  • Air filter clogged with dust or soaked with too much oil
  • Intake opening blocked by snow, leaves or a collapsed duct
  • Loose clamp or cracked duct between filter box and MAF on bank 2
  • Faulty filter restriction or inlet pressure sensor

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: easy
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P227F means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 7F: Specific fault in that system
