P2282: Air Leak Between Throttle Body and Intake Valves

P2282 means air enters the intake behind the throttle, so it reaches the cylinders without passing the throttle. Ford uses it as its PCV monitor on turbo engines with speed density: airflow worked out from manifold pressure is compared with airflow through the throttle, and a calculated leak of 1 lb/min or more for at least 5 s, with the throttle at 4 degrees or less, sets the code (2012, 2020-2023 and 2024 summaries). Ford designed the PCV inlet tube so that pulling it off leaves a large, detectable opening. Ford bulletins blame a stuck-open brake vacuum valve or tube on the 2.0 EcoBoost in the 2019-2020 Edge and Nautilus (TSB 20-2151), ice in the manifold of the 2020-2021 Escape hybrid (SSM 49654) and PCM software on the 2023 Maverick hybrid (TSB 23-2193). Land Rover found a detached brake vacuum pipe (LTB01186).

High severity. Can I keep driving?Be careful: the car may suddenly lose power. If it goes into limp mode, get off the highway and calmly make your way to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • High or unstable idle speed
  • MIL on, sometimes with a hissing noise from the engine bay
  • Harder brake pedal if the brake vacuum line is affected

Most likely causes

  • Brake booster vacuum pipe detached or its check valve stuck open
  • Crankcase ventilation hose disconnected or cracked
  • Leaking intake manifold gasket, throttle body seal or vacuum hose
  • Iced manifold pressure sensor or software miscalculating the leak

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2282 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 82: Specific fault in that system
