P2287: Injector Control Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent

P2287 covers an ICP sensor signal that drops out or jumps for brief moments, too short or too irregular to be judged as a steady low or high fault. No manufacturer documents P2287 publicly; Ford's 6.0L summaries and its 2014 PCM table contain the steady electrical codes P2285 and P2286 but not this one. On HEUI diesels the sensor is mounted on the engine in a hot, oily environment, so oil creeping into the connector, fretting terminals and harness rubbing are the usual reasons for an unstable signal. Since the PCM regulates high-pressure oil from this reading, short dropouts can make the engine stumble or surge before a substitute value takes over. CARB counts such inputs among the components whose circuit faults must be monitored.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Occasional stumble, surge or hesitation
  • Code returns without a fault visible in the workshop

Most likely causes

  • Engine oil creeping into the sensor connector
  • Fretting or loose terminals at sensor or PCM
  • Harness rubbing on engine parts and shorting briefly

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2287 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 87: Specific fault in that system
