P2289: Injector Control Pressure Too High - Engine Off

P2289 is a plausibility test carried out with the engine stopped. On a HEUI diesel the high-pressure oil pump is driven by the engine, so once it stops, injector control pressure should drop to almost nothing. Ford's 6.0L Power Stroke summaries check this in engine-off mode: if the ICP reading stays above 10 MPa for more than 10 s (2003) or 12 s (2004), P2289 is stored. A real pressure that high without a running pump is unlikely, so the code mainly points to an ICP sensor with an offset or contamination, or to a signal circuit pulled up by a fault that stays within the electrical limits of P2286. Ford's 2014 PCM table marks it as a MIL code. P2288 is the counterpart with the engine running.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • MIL on, possibly after the engine was switched off
  • Hard starting if the PCM trusts the false pressure value

Most likely causes

  • ICP sensor with a positive offset or oil contamination
  • Partial short between signal and reference voltage
  • Faulty input stage in the PCM

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2289 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 89: Specific fault in that system
