P22EA: Cylinder 5 Alternative Fuel Injector Control Circuit Low

P22EA stands for a low voltage on the cylinder 5 gas injector control wire, a code limited to engines with at least five cylinders. TransEco Energy's AFCM table points to a grounded wire or an open line, lights the MIL in bi-fuel use and applies the gasoline injector fault response; Ford's 2014 code list, written for V8 engines among others, keeps P22EA as a MIL code. A control wire resting on ground can energize the injector without pause, so cylinder 5 may run far too rich and its spark plug may foul; with an open line it misses gas instead. Inspect the wire along the rail of the affected bank first. P22EB is the high side, P22E9 the plain open circuit, and the gasoline injector reports P0273.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If you smell gas, do not keep driving or start the engine: move away and call for assistance. With no smell, drive moderately to an authorized shop.

Cylinder 5 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Cylinder 5 runs rich or misfires in gas mode
  • Fouled spark plug on cylinder 5

Most likely causes

  • Cylinder 5 control wire shorted to ground along the gas rail
  • Interrupted wire or terminal, flagged as Low by some modules
  • Shorted output stage in the gas control module

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P22EA means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • EA: Specific fault in that system
