P2385: EGR Sensor E Circuit

P2385 is the general circuit code for a fifth EGR-related sensor, labelled E. The letter is assigned by each manufacturer, so the code only makes sense on engines with an extensive set of EGR sensors, such as diesels that pair high- and low-pressure loops with several pressure and temperature probes. No manufacturer documents P2385 publicly. The closest published logic is for sensor D: Ford's 2024–2025 petrol summary stores P2380 when its smart EGR pressure sensor reports an internal error, and GM's 2025 diesel tables use the D codes for the low-pressure EGR differential pressure sensor. CARB requires circuit checks on every input the EGR monitor depends on. P2386 and P2387 narrow the fault to high or low signal; with any of them stored, EGR diagnosis is suspended or EGR reduced.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can normally drive in moderation, but get it repaired soon: if the valve is stuck open, the engine may idle very poorly.

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • EGR monitor not completing, readiness stays open
  • Possibly higher NOx and slightly changed engine response under load

Most likely causes

  • Connector of EGR sensor E unplugged, damaged or corroded
  • Open or shorted wire between sensor and engine control unit
  • Sensor electrically failed
  • Shared 5 V reference supply faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2385 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 3: Ignition and misfires
  • 85: Specific fault in that system
