P241D: SCR Inducement - Forced Engine Shutdown

P241D marks the last step of the diesel SCR inducement: after repeated warnings about a reductant problem were ignored, the engine module blocks further engine starts. On FCA's 3.0L EcoDiesel (Ram 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2014) a DEF-related code first triggers a dash message, after 50 miles a restart countdown, and after 150 miles no restart; P241D is then stored and only sets alongside the causing code. A wiTECH routine allows up to 49 more miles. Jaguar Land Rover describes the same code on the Ingenium 2.0D when DEF was not topped up. CARB accepts such inducement strategies as a guard against running without proper reductant. The real fault is the companion code; repair it, then clear and re-run the monitors.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Deal with it soon. If the instrument cluster shows a countdown, the car may not restart once it reaches zero.

Symptoms

  • Engine will not restart, message to service the DEF system
  • Earlier countdown warnings in the cluster
  • Check engine light with further SCR codes

Most likely causes

  • DEF tank run empty after warnings were ignored
  • Unrepaired SCR or DEF system fault (pump, pressure, quality, NOx sensor)
  • Causing code erased while the inducement remains active

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P241D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 4: Emissions
  • 1D: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions
