P2464 is stored when the pressure drop across the second particulate filter stays smaller than the controller predicts for the current exhaust flow. Only engines that run a separate filter on each bank, typically larger V diesels, can log it. No manufacturer publishes a bank 2 calibration for this number, so the bank 1 partner P244A is the reference: Ford's 2023 diesels treat it as a missing substrate test and flag a filter inlet pressure below a flow-dependent limit, roughly 8 kPa at 300 m³/h, held for 90 s. CARB requires a check of this kind so that a cracked, melted or removed filter cannot go unnoticed. In the workshop a sensing hose that has come off, split or plugged is found far more often than a broken substrate. The MIL comes on; some engines also reduce power.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.
Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Visible soot at the tailpipe if the filter is damaged
- Regeneration suspended or reduced power on some engines
Most likely causes
- Pressure sensing hose of the bank 2 filter detached, cracked or leaking
- Upstream sensing port or line blocked with soot or condensate
- Filter substrate cracked, melted or removed
- Differential pressure sensor drifting low
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P2464 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 4: Emissions
- 64: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P2464?
If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.
What causes code P2464?
The most common causes are: pressure sensing hose of the bank 2 filter detached, cracked or leaking; upstream sensing port or line blocked with soot or condensate; filter substrate cracked, melted or removed.
