P252D: Engine Oil Quality Sensor Circuit High

P252D means the oil quality sensor reports a voltage above its valid window. A short of the signal line to a positive conductor, a broken sensor ground or, with pull-up inputs, an interrupted signal wire can all push the value to the upper stop. Sensor electronics that latch high are a further possibility. Manufacturers do not document trigger values for this code. Depending on how the signal is scaled, a reading pinned at the top could pretend perfect oil or badly aged oil, so the computer ignores it and may rely on its calculated oil life instead. CARB only requires such checks where the sensor matters for emissions or other diagnostics, which is why a lamp is rarely involved. P252C is the low counterpart, P252E covers dropouts and P253F real oil deterioration. Expect a warning or a blank oil condition value.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the red oil warning light comes on, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine. Do not continue until you have confirmed the level and pressure.

Symptoms

  • Warning or blank oil condition value in the cluster
  • Oil change reminder appears too early, too late or not at all

Most likely causes

  • Sensor ground or signal wire interrupted, connector pin pushed back
  • Signal wire shorted to a supply or battery-voltage wire
  • Sensor electronics stuck at a high output

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P252D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 2D: Specific fault in that system
