P2533 is the general fault of the circuit that is live in both the on and the start position of the ignition switch, often called run/crank. Unlike the pure run line it must stay powered while the starter turns, so modules rely on it to remain awake during cranking. Ford lists P2533 in its 2014 BOSS 302S code table with the M marker for the MIL. Ford also published bulletin 21-2244 for 2021 Mustang Mach-E built before 7 July 2021: the MIL could come on with P061A, P1A1E and/or P2533 because of parameters in the powertrain control module, and the remedy is reprogramming the PCM and other modules. Wiring checks still come first on older vehicles. Low and high are P2534 and P2535.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible. If you feel jerking or the light flashes, stop: a misfire can damage the catalytic converter.
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Possible no-start or stall during cranking
Most likely causes
- Powertrain module software or parameters (Ford Mach-E 2021, reprogramming per TSB 21-2244)
- Fuse or relay fault in the run/crank feed
- Loose or corroded terminal at the module
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
What each character of P2533 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 5: Speed and idle
- 33: Specific fault in that system
