P253F: Engine Oil Deteriorated

P253F states that the engine computer considers the oil used up. Depending on the design this verdict comes from an oil quality sensor or, more often, from an oil life model that tallies operating conditions such as load, temperatures and estimated fuel dilution. Ford's 2014 BOSS 302S engine code table contains P253F without a lamp entry; exact criteria are published by no maker. Jeep shows how sensitive such a model is: for the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe with the 2.0 L turbo PHEV engine, bulletin 18-013-23 updates the PCM because the displayed oil life fell too fast once calculated dilution was high; the same update concerns electric mode being unavailable during the Fuel Oil Refresh Mode. Usual triggers are an overdue oil change, a counter not reset after service or heavy short-trip use. Quality sensor circuit faults are P252A to P252E.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the red oil warning light comes on, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine. Do not continue until you have confirmed the level and pressure.

Symptoms

  • Oil change or oil quality warning in the cluster
  • Remaining oil life shown as zero or dropping unusually fast

Most likely causes

  • Oil change overdue, oil actually aged
  • Oil life counter not reset after the last oil change
  • Strong fuel dilution from short trips, cold operation or frequent regenerations
  • Oil life calculation in the engine software too aggressive (update available)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: easy

What each character of P253F means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 3F: Specific fault in that system
