With P254D the controller sees the PTO speed selector 1 input above its upper limit. Causes are a signal wire rubbing against a battery-fed circuit, a broken ground or sensor return that lets the line float to the pull-up voltage, or a selector supply that is too high. Deutz separates these on its multi-stage speed selector: P3045-12 for a short to battery and P3045-A1 for a supply voltage outside its range. In GM's 2008–2014 chassis-cab PTO system a remote set input above 3.33 V is a valid choice, Set Speed 2 at 1700 rpm by default, which again shows that only a coded selector can flag this state. No manufacturer publishes P254D. P254C is the low-side counterpart. Operators notice the PTO jumping to the highest step or not engaging.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.
Symptoms
- PTO jumps to the highest preset speed
- PTO does not engage
Most likely causes
- Signal wire shorted to a battery-fed circuit
- Open ground or return line letting the input float high
- Selector supply voltage too high
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
What each character of P254D means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 5: Speed and idle
- 4D: Specific fault in that system
