P258F: Torque Management Request Output Signal

P258F concerns the sending side of a torque management link. One controller – for example the engine module talking to a transmission or hybrid controller, or the reverse – transmits torque requests and finds that its own output is faulty, missing or not accepted by the receiver. The receiving side is better documented as P2544 and following: GM's 2020 table 20OBDG04 checks incoming torque requests from the TCM for a wrong protection value, a broken rolling counter and implausible magnitudes, Type B. No manufacturer documents P258F publicly. CARB's rule requires output components driven by a computer to be checked for correct functional response where feasible, which is the logic behind such a code. Typical causes are CAN wiring, mismatched software after programming or a faulty module. Harsh shifts or reduced power can follow.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Check engine lamp on
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Reduced engine power

Most likely causes

  • CAN wiring or connector fault between the modules
  • Software levels of sending and receiving module do not match
  • Low voltage or poor ground at one of the modules
  • Sending control module internally faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P258F means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 8F: Specific fault in that system
