P25B0: Fuel Level Sensor A Stuck

P25B0 means the main fuel level sender keeps reporting the same level although the engine has clearly been burning fuel. Ford runs this as a continuous check: the module totals the fuel injected, converts it into a share of tank capacity and compares that with how far the sender reading has moved. Depending on where the reading is frozen, the allowed mismatch is 60 % above a 90 % level, 30 % below 10 % and 25 % in between, and a full check can take 100 to 120 miles. Ford's 2012 summary still filed this fault under P0460; the 2014 Boss 302S list already marks P25B0 as a lamp code, and the 2024 summary reports it as P0460 with failure type 2A. GM covers a frozen sender with P0461 instead. CARB names the stuck fuel level sensor as a rationality check. The gauge stays put, so running dry is a real risk.

Low severity. Can I keep driving? You can normally keep driving. If it affects the fuel level, do not trust the gauge and refuel earlier than usual.

Symptoms

  • Fuel gauge stays at the same mark over a long distance
  • Engine runs out of fuel while the gauge still shows fuel
  • Check engine lamp on

Most likely causes

  • Float arm caught on the tank wall, baffle or pump module
  • Worn spot on the sender resistor track holding the wiper at one value
  • Float soaked with fuel and sunk to the bottom
  • Fuel consumption calculation in the PCM not matching the tank

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P25B0 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • B0: Specific fault in that system
