P263D: Reductant Heater Driver Performance

DEF turns solid at about -11 °C, so SCR systems heat the tank, pump and lines electrically. P263D concerns the power stage that switches these heaters rather than a heater element. On Ford's 6.7 L Power Stroke the heaters are switched by the glow plug module; the plausibility test runs once per trip at peak heater power and sets P263D when the driver circuits exceed 125 °C. Element faults are separate (P20BA, P20BE heater A/B performance, P20C2 heater C supply below 5 V). Deutz uses P263D-00 differently on its EMR engine controllers, namely when defrosting the AdBlue system fails. If the fluid cannot thaw, dosing starts late or not at all, NOx rises and the SCR warning sequence toward a speed or power limit can begin.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Deal with it soon. If the instrument cluster shows a countdown, the car may not restart once it reaches zero.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light and DEF/SCR warning
  • DEF not thawing in cold weather, dosing delayed
  • Countdown to speed or power limitation possible

Most likely causes

  • Heater power stage overheating from excessive load current
  • Partially shorted heater element or wiring drawing too much current
  • Internal fault of the module that drives the heaters

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P263D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 6: Control modules and outputs
  • 3D: Specific fault in that system
