P264C: "A" Rocker Arm Actuator Position Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1)

P264C is set when the signal from the position sensor of rocker arm actuator A, bank 1, sits below its valid window. Typical electrical explanations are a short of the signal wire to ground, a lost 5 V reference, or a sensor that has failed internally. CARB lists such out-of-range checks for every sensor in a lift or timing system under the comprehensive component rules. No carmaker publishes P264C with a threshold; it would only appear on engines whose actuator carries position feedback, such as motor-driven continuous lift designs. Expect the controller to stop adjusting lift, with weaker pull and higher consumption; P264D is the high-side counterpart.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Weaker pull, lift no longer varied
  • Higher fuel consumption

Most likely causes

  • Signal wire shorted to ground
  • 5 V sensor supply missing
  • Position sensor failed internally

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P264C means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 6: Control modules and outputs
  • 4C: Specific fault in that system
