Toyota documents this code on Valvematic engines, where an electric lift controller turns a shaft that alters rocker geometry and reports its angle back. P265B is set when that feedback stays electrically valid but does not track the target. Bulletin T-SB-0011-14 (2014 Corolla, 2ZR-FAE) pairs it with P2646 and fixes it by reflashing the ECM. T-SB-0098-19 (2018–19 C-HR with 3ZR-FAE, 2020 Corolla with 2ZR-FAE) adds the Valvematic angle codes P10A0 and P1055 and replaces the lift controller if the code returns. Both start with a learn value reset and an engine-off active test in which the actual angle should drop to about 105–106° and climb above 108°. CARB demands that such systems recognise deviations from the target and sluggish reaction.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.
Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.
Symptoms
- MIL on, often together with P2646
- Reduced power and slower throttle response
- Fault may return after a short rev to 3,500 rpm
Most likely causes
- Outdated ECM calibration (Toyota 2014 Corolla)
- Continuously variable lift controller sticking or worn
- Stored learn values no longer match the mechanism
- Drifting angle sensor in the controller
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P265B means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 6: Control modules and outputs
- 5B: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P265B?
If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.
What causes code P265B?
The most common causes are: outdated ECM calibration (Toyota 2014 Corolla); continuously variable lift controller sticking or worn; stored learn values no longer match the mechanism.
