Many heavy diesels do not raise exhaust temperature for filter regeneration by late in-cylinder injection, but spray diesel straight into the exhaust ahead of the oxidation catalyst through a separate doser, often called the seventh injector. P2697 means the solenoid that meters this fuel cannot be driven because its circuit is open. Volvo and Mack document it in their aftertreatment hydrocarbon injector (AHI) guide for US10 engines with 2013 OBD and later, as P2697 with failure type 13: the electric valve sits in the AHI dosing module, which moved onto the fuel filter housing from model year 2017, while the nozzle in the exhaust is purely hydraulic. The guide sends technicians to the module connector and harness. No dosing means no active regeneration, and soot builds up in the filter.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.
Symptoms
- Active particulate filter regeneration not possible
- Rising soot load, later derate
- MIL on
Most likely causes
- Loose, corroded or damaged connector at the dosing module
- Harness to the dosing valve broken by heat or vibration
- Dosing valve coil inside the module burnt open
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P2697 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 6: Control modules and outputs
- 97: Specific fault in that system
