P28F0: Engine Disconnect Clutch Actuator Stuck On

P28F0 is the opposite of P28EF: the actuator of the engine disconnect clutch keeps applying the clutch although the controller wants it released. The engine then stays tied to e-machine and wheels, so electric-only driving and engine stop at standstill are no longer possible. No manufacturer documents P28F0 publicly. A Hyundai patent explains how such a fault is found: with the clutch commanded open, the speeds on both sides of it are compared, and if they still match, the clutch is judged stuck; the controller then blocks engine restarts that could push torque straight to the drive shaft. CARB treats the clutch actuator as a monitored hybrid output. P2886 names a clutch stuck closed itself, while P28F0 blames the actuator. Expect stalling or shudder at stops.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Engine stalls or shudders when the car comes to a stop
  • No electric-only driving, engine runs all the time
  • Hybrid system warning and restricted engine restarts

Most likely causes

  • Clutch pressure valve stuck in the applied position, for example by debris
  • Valve or actuator driver permanently energised by a short in wiring or module
  • Clutch plates overheated and dragging so the actuator cannot release them

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P28F0 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • F0: Specific fault in that system
