P2AA9: Engine Coolant Bypass Valve B Position Sensor Circuit Low

P2AA9 is set once the position sensor on coolant valve B reports a value below its valid band, which nearly always means the signal wire or the sensor output is pulled toward ground. Rotary coolant valves in thermal management modules report their angle so the engine computer can steer coolant between radiator, heater and other loops. No manufacturer documents P2AA9 publicly. GM's 2025 diesel tables list the matching check for valve C as P23C4: the SENT reading has to drop under 27 counts for 4 of 5 seconds, rated Type B with two trips, and the test only runs while SENT communication itself is healthy. Ford, by contrast, gives the letter B to a transmission cooling valve without position feedback. The high-side fault is P2AAA.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Watch the temperature gauge. If it climbs or a warning appears, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine: overheating can cause serious damage.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Engine warms up slowly or runs cooler than usual
  • Cabin heating or transmission warm-up weaker, depending on what valve B serves

Most likely causes

  • Sensor signal wire chafed through and shorted to ground
  • Position sensor electronics in the valve module failed (often only as complete valve unit)
  • Coolant or moisture in the sensor connector creating a leakage path to ground

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2AA9 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • A: Hybrid or air and fuel
  • A9: Specific fault in that system
