P2ABA: Wastegate Position Sensor B Circuit

P2ABA covers a general circuit fault of the position sensor on the wastegate of turbocharger B, so it can only occur on engines with two turbos and electric wastegates: on a parallel layout the turbo of bank 2, on a series layout the second one downstream. Ford uses it on twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engines. TSB 22-2357 reprograms 2021-22 F-150 2.7L trucks that log P2ABA, P2ABC, P2AB7 or P2AB9 because of software parameters; TSB 23-2353 and the later SSM 54083 cover 2020-23 Explorer, 2022-23 F-150 and 2023-24 Expedition/Navigator, first with a software update and then with the workshop manual pinpoint tests. No limit is published for this general code. CARB lists wastegate valve position among the data items an OBD system must report. Low/high are P2ABB/P2ABC.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive without demanding power and go to a repair shop soon. If you see a lot of blue smoke or hear a metallic noise, shut off the engine.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, on Ford also the powertrain (wrench) indicator
  • Reduced power, boost limited

Most likely causes

  • PCM calibration that sets the code falsely (Ford reflash for listed models)
  • Damaged harness or connector at the bank 2 turbocharger
  • Electric wastegate actuator B with its built-in position sensor failed

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2ABA means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • A: Hybrid or air and fuel
  • BA: Specific fault in that system
