P2ABD: Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Actuator A Driver Current/Temperature Too High

P2ABD is raised by the output stage that powers the electric wastegate actuator of turbocharger A when it detects excessive current or overheating. Ford's 2020-23 gasoline summary groups it with P0243 in the wastegate A circuit check: the PCM's smart driver chip recognises a short to battery or ground and an open load on its own and reports within 0.4 s, and the stuck open/closed tests P25B3/P25B4 are only allowed when neither code is present. No Ford bulletin naming P2ABD was found. GM runs a comparable self-protection check on the EGR cooler bypass motor (P2AA5, H-bridge above 170 °C). A linkage that binds and stalls the motor, an internally shorted motor or chafed supply wires make the driver protect itself. P2ABE is the same fault on turbo B.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive without demanding power and go to a repair shop soon. If you see a lot of blue smoke or hear a metallic noise, shut off the engine.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Clearly reduced power because the wastegate is no longer driven
  • Stuck wastegate checks P25B3/P25B4 not run while the code is stored

Most likely causes

  • Wastegate flap or rod binding from soot, corrosion or heat so the motor stalls
  • Electric actuator motor shorted internally
  • Actuator supply wires chafed to ground or to each other
  • Driver stage in the PCM faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2ABD means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • A: Hybrid or air and fuel
  • BD: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

What causes code P2ABD?

The most common causes are: wastegate flap or rod binding from soot, corrosion or heat so the motor stalls; electric actuator motor shorted internally; actuator supply wires chafed to ground or to each other.
