P2B35 is the short-to-voltage counterpart for intake-side actuator B on bank 1, the second of the sleeve-shifting solenoids on camshaft A. In GM's L3B tables (2019 and again 2025) this test runs while the output is off: if the control line shows 0.5 Ω or less towards the controller supply, a short to power is assumed, and 4 hits in 5 samples set a Type A code with the warning lamp on in the same drive. A wire rubbing against a powered circuit in the harness or an internal short in the solenoid are typical reasons. Because the control line no longer behaves as commanded, the cam sleeve cannot be moved reliably and this actuator drops out of lift switching. Open and ground faults are covered by P2B33 and P2B34.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive little and gently. If you hear timing chain noise or the oil light comes on, shut off the engine.
Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.
Symptoms
- MIL on during the drive in which the fault appears
- Intake lift profile no longer changes as commanded
- Higher fuel use because cylinder deactivation is blocked
Most likely causes
- Control wire chafed against a powered circuit in the engine harness
- Internal short in actuator B
- Output stage in the engine control module faulty
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P2B35 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- B: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 35: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P2B35?

What causes code P2B35?
The most common causes are: control wire chafed against a powered circuit in the engine harness; internal short in actuator B; output stage in the engine control module faulty.
