P2B3D: B Camshaft Profile Actuator B Control Circuit Low Bank 2

P2B3D: the control wire of the second exhaust-side profile actuator on bank 2 (camshaft B, actuator B) has contact with ground. Publicly documented use by a manufacturer is not known. For comparison, GM's L3B diagnostics define the bank 1 code P2B3A as a ground short of at most 0.5 Ω with the driver on and four failed tests out of five. Because 13 CCR 1968.2 requires engine control outputs to be monitored for such faults, a V engine with exhaust lobe switching on both banks would need this code. Look for chafing at brackets and valve cover edges or for a shorted coil. The exhaust valves on bank 2 then keep their current lift profile, and any function that relies on switching there is unavailable.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive little and gently. If you hear timing chain noise or the oil light comes on, shut off the engine.

Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Bank 2 exhaust stays on one lift profile

Most likely causes

  • Wire chafed at a bracket or valve cover edge on bank 2
  • Shorted coil in exhaust actuator B
  • Oil or water in the connector

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2B3D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 3D: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions
