P2B48: B Camshaft Position Actuator Position Sensor B Range/Performance Bank 1

P2B48 is the plausibility code for sensor B at the bank 1 exhaust actuator (camshaft B): the circuit works, yet the reported position contradicts the command. Mercedes handles this fault type on its CAMTRONIC V8s for the exhaust sensor of solenoid 1 as P34BD and fixes it through software and newer actuators; P2B48 itself is not found in any public manufacturer source. GM's L3B gives an idea of the logic under P2C13: the exhaust Hall feedback must pass through three states per shift, and a signal without a shift command also counts as an error. Carbon or sludge on the actuator pin, worn parts or a damaged shift groove can cause the mismatch. Bank 2 counterpart: P2B4C.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive little and gently. If you hear timing chain noise or the oil light comes on, shut off the engine.

Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Exhaust lift switching held in one position
  • Possibly rough running during shift attempts

Most likely causes

  • Actuator pin sticking from deposits or wear
  • Outdated engine control software
  • Shift groove or cam sleeve damaged

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2B48 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 48: Specific fault in that system
