P3410: Cylinder 2 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Performance

P3410 covers a cylinder 2 deactivation system that is electrically intact but does not do what is commanded, such as valves that keep opening or fail to return. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. GM checks this behavior on the L84 under its own code P3499, by watching manifold pressure while cylinder 2 should be off; Ford uses the matching cylinder 1 code P3402. GM bulletin 21-NA-036 for 3.6 L V6 engines shows how such faults appear in practice: oil leaking past the control valve or rockers that do not latch cause misfires on cylinder 2 (P0302). Circuit faults belong to P3409, P3411 and P3412. Expect roughness and lost economy.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive little and gently. If you hear timing chain noise or the oil light comes on, shut off the engine.

Cylinder 2 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • Misfire on cylinder 2, often after a reduced-cylinder phase
  • Check engine lamp on
  • Vibration at light load

Most likely causes

  • Oil bleeding past the control valve seal, pressure lost
  • Rocker or lifter of cylinder 2 not latching
  • Low or degraded oil
  • Broken solenoid tip left in the bore keeps a new valve from seating

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P3410 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 3: Generic or manufacturer code, depending on the range
  • 4: Emissions
  • 10: Specific fault in that system
