P0006: Fuel Shutoff Valve A Control Circuit Low

The fuel shutoff valve is a solenoid valve that opens or blocks the fuel supply. On diesel engines it is usually closed without current, so that the engine stops reliably when switched off. The engine control module energises it to let fuel flow and monitors its control circuit continuously. P0006 means voltage or current in the control circuit is below the expected range, typically because of a short to ground; depending on the output stage an open circuit can also show up this way. The valve is then not energised correctly, which can prevent starting or make the engine stall.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid long trips and hard acceleration. If you smell fuel or the car stalls, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Engine stalls

Most likely causes

  • Short to ground in the harness
  • Shorted turns in the valve coil
  • Corroded connector
  • Output driver in the engine control module faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0006 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 06: Specific fault in that system
