The fuel volume regulator (also called metering unit or suction control valve) is a solenoid valve on the inlet side of the high-pressure pump, used mainly on common-rail diesel engines. The engine control module pulses it to set how much fuel the pump draws in and delivers to the rail, and in this way controls rail pressure. To compensate for tolerances and wear, the control module learns a long-term correction of the regulator control. P000E is set when this correction leaves its calibrated range. The regulator is electrically fine, but the system needs an unusually large correction all the time, which points to wear or contamination of regulator or pump, a weak low-pressure supply, or a missing calibration after a pump replacement.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid long trips and hard acceleration. If you smell fuel or the car stalls, do not continue.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Often hardly noticeable at first, later loss of power
- Hard starting if rail pressure is wrong
- Additional rail pressure codes possible
Most likely causes
- Fuel volume regulator worn or contaminated
- High-pressure pump worn, delivering less
- Low-pressure side: clogged filter, weak lift pump or air in the fuel
- Not calibrated after pump or regulator replacement
- Rail pressure sensor drifting
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P000E means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 0E: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P000E?
Avoid long trips and hard acceleration. If you smell fuel or the car stalls, do not continue.
What causes code P000E?
The most common causes are: fuel volume regulator worn or contaminated; high-pressure pump worn, delivering less; low-pressure side: clogged filter, weak lift pump or air in the fuel.
