The engine module learns a small-quantity correction for each injector: on overrun it gives one injector a tiny test injection (GM about 1.5 mm³), measures the resulting crankshaft acceleration and corrects the injector's activation time per rail pressure step. P02DB means the learned correction for cylinder 8 has reached its upper limit at at least one pressure step: the injector needs much more activation time than nominal – it delivers too little or opens late, for example from coking. GM diesels set it at limits of roughly ±66–182 µs after two trips. Older GM calibrations (LML) use only this code of the pair, for both directions. It is documented on GM's 6.6 litre L5P diesel and on Land Rover's 5.0 V8 petrol, where a software update is the first step. It differs from P01D9 (over retarded), which some systems derive from the same learning.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.
Cylinder 8 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Often nothing noticeable; possibly rough idle or knocking
- Possibly smoke or loss of power
Most likely causes
- Injector of cylinder 8 coked or worn (delivers too little)
- Engine software (update available for some models)
- Injector correction code not or wrongly programmed after replacement
- Disturbed crankshaft signal (worn drive belt, tone wheel, dual-mass flywheel)
- Low compression on this cylinder
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P02DB means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 2: Fuel injection
- DB: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P02DB?
Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.
What causes code P02DB?
The most common causes are: injector of cylinder 8 coked or worn (delivers too little); engine software (update available for some models); injector correction code not or wrongly programmed after replacement.
