P0369: Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent Bank 1

Camshaft position sensor B is the exhaust camshaft sensor (bank 1 = side with cylinder 1), usually a Hall sensor on the exhaust cam phaser. P0369 means its signal is basically present, but now and then a cam pulse arrives at a crank angle where none is expected, or pulses drop out. Ford checks this in its camshaft ignition system test from 200 rpm and decides within 5 s; with this and the other cam timing codes active, Ford also suspends its oxygen sensor monitor. FCA lists P0369 among the cam sensor codes for which the cam/crank synchronisation event data should be read before replacing the sensor. GM does not use the code (2014–2019 only P0365/P0366). Typical causes are a loose contact, interference from ignition wiring and a sensor with metal debris or a borderline air gap.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid driving: the engine can stall while moving. If the timing is off, continuing can cause serious damage.

Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Sporadic jerking or stalling
  • Occasional starting problems

Most likely causes

  • Loose contact in connector or wiring
  • Interference from the ignition (routing, shielding)
  • Sensor with metal debris or borderline air gap
  • Tone wheel or phaser damaged

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: easy
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0369 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 3: Ignition and misfires
  • 69: Specific fault in that system
