P0610: Control Module Vehicle Options Error

The module checks its vehicle-specific configuration for completeness and validity: at Ford the vehicle identification block or as-built data with tyre circumference, axle ratio, transmission and options; at GM the programmed vehicle options. Ford 2012 sets P0610 when one or more fields of that block are configured wrongly, the Ford diesel checks continuously within 0.5 s; GM and Saab V6 engines set it in the first trip, also for incomplete programming. Typical triggers are a new or used module without correct configuration, an interrupted reprogramming, or changed tyres or axle without updating the data. Symptoms include wrong speedometer readings or shift points and missing functions such as cruise control. The fix is rewriting the configuration or VIN-specific programming with the manufacturer's tool; replace the module only if the code returns.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? It depends on the symptoms. If the car is running normally you can go to a repair shop; if it goes into limp mode, drive as little as possible.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (depending on maker and variant)
  • Wrong speedometer reading or shift points
  • Optional functions such as cruise control missing

Most likely causes

  • Module not or wrongly configured after replacement (used part, missing as-built data)
  • Interrupted or faulty reprogramming
  • Changed tyre size or axle ratio without updating the data
  • Internal memory fault of the module

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0610 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 6: Control modules and outputs
  • 10: Specific fault in that system
