P0630: VIN Not Programmed or Incompatible ECM/PCM

Since model year 2005 CARB requires exactly one module to report the VIN to a scan tool, and reprogramming the VIN must erase all emission-related diagnostic data. P0630 means the engine module holds no valid VIN or one that does not fit. GM checks continuously whether every VIN position is a valid ASCII character (older tables: bytes 00 or FF count as empty), 250 ms, with the lamp in the first trip. At Ford the body module sends VIN, tyre circumference and axle ratio at every start, and P0630 sets while only default values are stored – so it covers more than the VIN; the 2023 diesel checks within 0.5 s. Hyundai requires writing the VIN after replacement; once written it cannot be changed. The engine runs normally; inspection stations may reject a missing VIN.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? It depends on the symptoms. If the car is running normally you can go to a repair shop; if it goes into limp mode, drive as little as possible.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (some Ford trucks without)
  • Scan tool shows no or a wrong VIN
  • Ford: wrong tyre or axle data, speedometer errors
  • Driving usually normal

Most likely causes

  • New replacement module without written VIN
  • Used module from another vehicle (VIN does not match)
  • Interrupted programming or missing configuration data from the body module (Ford)
  • Internal memory fault

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0630 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 6: Control modules and outputs
  • 30: Specific fault in that system
