P0754: Shift Solenoid A Intermittent

A shift solenoid is an electrically switched valve in the valve body. Manufacturers use these codes differently: Ford reports an open circuit with the base code and shorts separately, newer GM units have separate low/high codes, and the letter is not tied to a valve number (Saab's 9-5: A = valve S2). P0754 is an intermittent fault of solenoid A: the feedback briefly shows a fault and then recovers. No manufacturer document available to us uses this code: Ford watches its solenoid circuits continuously under the open and short codes, GM counts failures over a window (more than 43 of 50) under P0753. Brief dropouts make the module switch the solenoid off and enter limp mode until the next start.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Limp mode or jolt at times, then normal again
  • Warning lamp comes and goes

Most likely causes

  • Loose contact or corrosion at the transmission connector
  • Chafed harness, dependent on temperature or vibration
  • Coil with heat-dependent winding fault

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0754 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • 54: Specific fault in that system
