P07DD: Incorrect Shift from Gear 2

The series 'Incorrect Shift from Gear N' (P07DC–P07E3 for gears 1–8, P07FA and P07FD for 9 and 10) covers a shift that leaves the starting gear but lands in a gear other than the commanded target – a skipped or overshot gear. A module can see this after the shift because the measured ratio matches the wrong gear. No manufacturer document available to us uses the series: Ford assigns such patterns to the shift solenoid that caused them (P0751 ff), newer GM automatics report clutch pressure valve codes. P07DD starts from gear 2. It differs from P0732 (wrong ratio while in gear 2, a slipping clutch), P072D (gear 2 cannot be left) and P0782 (the shift itself takes too long or flares). Detection, MIL and trip count therefore follow only by analogy from CARB's functional check and Ford's ratio and shift completion checks.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Wrong or skipped gear when shifting out of gear 2
  • Harsh shift or engine speed jump
  • Transmission warning, possibly limp mode in a fixed gear

Most likely causes

  • Shift or pressure control valve sticking in the valve body
  • Clutch or brake pack worn or leaking
  • Fluid low or contaminated
  • Wrong adaptives or software
  • Turbine or output speed signal wrong

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P07DD means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • DD: Specific fault in that system
