P083A: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch G Circuit

Transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch G is one of up to eight pressure inputs (A to H) that SAE J2012 provides for automatic gearboxes. No maker could be found that uses the letter G: GM's tables up to 2025, Ford's summaries and Allison stop at A to E. The description therefore follows the general rule for gearbox inputs in California's OBD regulation, which demands circuit and plausibility checks, and the logic of the A and B codes. P083A is the general circuit fault, set when the module sees a fault on this input without telling low, high or plausibility apart.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning lamp on
  • Limp mode with substitute gear or limited ratio
  • Harsh or delayed shifts

Most likely causes

  • Pressure switch or sensor in the valve body faulty or stuck
  • Harness or connector at the gearbox: fluid wicking, corrosion
  • Sticking valve in the valve body
  • Fluid level or condition
  • Transmission control module

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P083A means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • 3A: Specific fault in that system
