P083B: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch G Circuit Range/Performance

Transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch G is one of up to eight pressure inputs (A to H) that SAE J2012 provides for automatic gearboxes. No maker could be found that uses the letter G: GM's tables up to 2025, Ford's summaries and Allison stop at A to E. The description therefore follows the general rule for gearbox inputs in California's OBD regulation, which demands circuit and plausibility checks, and the logic of the A and B codes. P083B means the signal is electrically valid but implausible: a switch does not follow the valve or clutch command, or a sensor deviates from target or from a partner sensor, as GM's CVT checks on A and B.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning lamp on
  • Limp mode with substitute gear or limited ratio
  • Harsh or delayed shifts

Most likely causes

  • Dirty or worn valve body, sticking valve
  • Pressure sensor or switch drifting
  • Mechanical damage: CVT belt or pulleys, pump, clutch
  • Fluid level low or fluid aged
  • Control module software thresholds

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P083B means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • 3B: Specific fault in that system
