P0895: Shift Time Too Short

Shift time is the duration of the speed transition from the old to the new ratio, measured from input and output speed. Gearbox modules adapt fill time and pressure to keep it in a calibrated window; the code sets when adaptation is at its limit and the time is still outside. No maker could be found using these generic codes; Saab's 1994 900 automatic monitored the same with its own code P1832, a window of 0.3 to 1.3 s and a limp program. P0895 means the shift completes faster than the window: clutch pressure too high or applied too early, giving a harsh shift.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Harsh, jerky shifts
  • Transmission warning lamp
  • Limp mode possible

Most likely causes

  • Pressure control valve stuck towards high pressure or line pressure too high
  • Shift adaptation faulty or reset, wrong software
  • Valve body: sticking spool, faulty damper or accumulator
  • Wrong fluid or level

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.

What each character of P0895 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • 95: Specific fault in that system
