Shift time is the duration of the speed transition from the old to the new ratio, measured from input and output speed. Gearbox modules adapt fill time and pressure to keep it in a calibrated window; the code sets when adaptation is at its limit and the time is still outside. No maker could be found using these generic codes; Saab's 1994 900 automatic monitored the same with its own code P1832, a window of 0.3 to 1.3 s and a limp program. P0896 means the transition takes longer than the window: the engine flares between gears from low pressure or worn plates. Long shifts heat the clutches, so a fixed gear is a common reaction.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.
Symptoms
- Delayed shifts, engine flares between gears
- Transmission warning lamp
- Limp mode in a fixed gear
Most likely causes
- Low or worn fluid, low pressure (pump, filter)
- Worn clutch plates or band
- Pressure or shift valve sticking, leaking piston seals
- Lost or reset adaptation, software
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It can trigger limp mode.
What each character of P0896 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 8: Transmission
- 96: Specific fault in that system
