P08CD: Shift Solenoid J Performance/Stuck Off

Set when shift solenoid J is switched on but the gear or clutch it controls does not respond, so the valve behaves as if stuck in its off position. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. The closest documented analogue is GM's P0751 on the 6-speed transmissions: the TCM commands first gear and flags shift solenoid A stuck off when slip reaches 400 rpm with the gear ratio out of window, a two-trip fault. Ford sets P0751 to P0771 when the obtained gear or shift pattern shows a solenoid functionally failed off after three solenoid events. CARB requires this kind of functional check. P08CE is the opposite fault, P08CF and P08D1 to P08D4 cover the circuit. The driver notices slipping, flare or a missing gear.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Engine flare or slipping during or after a shift
  • A gear is missing or skipped
  • Transmission may hold a substitute gear

Most likely causes

  • Solenoid or its shift valve held in the off position by debris or varnish
  • Low fluid level or weak supply pressure to the valve
  • Worn clutch pack or leaking seal in the circuit served by the valve
  • Solenoid coil too weak to move the valve

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P08CD means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • CD: Specific fault in that system
