Points to a control circuit of shift solenoid K that is neither open nor shorted, yet whose measured values, usually coil current, do not fit the commanded state. No manufacturer documents this code publicly, and the analogue for solenoid A, P0972, is not used in the GM or Ford sources either. Ford covers the same failure with an electrical current check that trips when the feedback current stays out of range for 0.5 seconds. Causes are typically a coil with changed resistance, a high-resistance contact or a weak TCM driver. CARB requires output circuits to be checked beyond plain opens and shorts. P08DB, P08DC and P08DD cover low, high and open. The valve may switch late or incompletely.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Delayed or soft shifts
- Possible limp mode
Most likely causes
- Solenoid coil resistance out of specification
- Corroded or loose pins adding resistance
- TCM output stage no longer delivers correct current
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P08DA means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 8: Transmission
- DA: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P08DA?
Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.
What causes code P08DA?
The most common causes are: solenoid coil resistance out of specification; corroded or loose pins adding resistance; tCM output stage no longer delivers correct current.
