P08EA: Drive Motor A Clutch Pawl Position Circuit

Concerns the sensor or switch that reports where the pawl of the drive motor A disconnect clutch sits, i.e. whether the form-locking clutch is engaged or released. The code sets when the control module finds an electrical fault in that signal circuit, such as an open line or a signal outside its valid states. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. GM fits a drive motor disconnect clutch switch to the front drive unit of the Corvette E-Ray and blames it for P08ED; pawl clutches with dedicated position sensors are described in supplier patents such as one from Means Industries. CARB requires input circuit checks. P08EB and P08EC are the low and high variants, P08ED the plausibility fault. Electric drive on that axle is usually inhibited.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or hybrid system warning on
  • Electric drive or all-wheel drive unavailable
  • Reduced acceleration in hybrid modes

Most likely causes

  • Faulty disconnect clutch position switch or sensor
  • Open signal or reference wire to the position switch
  • Corroded or loose connector at the drive unit
  • Faulty input stage in the drive motor control module

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P08EA means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • EA: Specific fault in that system
