P0911: Gate Select Actuator Circuit Range/Performance

Plausibility fault in the drive circuit of the gate select actuator of an automated manual gearbox. The circuit is neither open nor shorted, but the current, voltage or response measured on it does not fit the command, for example a current that is too high or too low for the requested movement. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. A Hyundai/Kia patent explains why controllers watch actuator current closely: jamming and sticking raise the motor load, and the motor can be damaged if this is not caught early. An Isuzu patent describes electric select actuators controlled by the transmission module. CARB requires functional checks on such outputs. P0910, P0912 and P0913 are the clear electrical faults, P0909 the failure to reach a gate. Gear changes become slow or are blocked.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Slow, hesitant or aborted gear changes
  • Gearbox enters fallback mode with limited gears

Most likely causes

  • Worn select motor drawing abnormal current
  • Stiff select mechanism overloading the actuator
  • High resistance in actuator wiring or connector

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0911 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 9: Transmission
  • 11: Specific fault in that system
