P0913: Gate Select Actuator Circuit High

Set when the drive circuit of the gate select actuator of an automated manual gearbox shows a voltage that is too high for the current switching state. Usual causes are a short of a motor or control line to battery voltage, or a driver stage in the module that no longer switches off; depending on the circuit design an open load can also read high. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. Patents by Isuzu and Hyundai/Kia describe electric select and shift actuators that the transmission controller powers directly, and CARB requires circuit checks on such outputs. P0912 is the opposite low fault, P0910 the open circuit, P0911 the plausibility fault and P0909 a select movement that misses its gate. The driver sees a warning lamp and a gearbox that can no longer change gates.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Gearbox stops changing gates or holds one gear
  • Actuator may run noisily or get hot

Most likely causes

  • Actuator wire shorted to battery voltage
  • Open motor winding read as high voltage by the driver stage
  • Driver stage in the transmission control module stuck on

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0913 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 9: Transmission
  • 13: Specific fault in that system
