P0B96: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense S Circuit Range/Performance

P0B96 is a plausibility code: the voltage of sense S looks electrically valid but fails to track the rest of the pack. GM's eAssist mild hybrid requires cell S to move at least half as much as the other cells once the average changes by more than 0.045 V, judged over 20 of 40 samples at 200 ms, Type B. The 16OBDG02 programme accepts a trend of 0.002 V and sets Type A after 35 of 40 evaluations, while the 2019 hybrid processor wants 0.005 V. On the 2012 two-mode trucks S is block 19, and the check scales blocks 19 and 20 by twenty and compares them with the pack voltage, with more than 70 V deviation in 160 of 170 samples leading to Type B. Circuit, low and high faults of S are excluded first.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • MIL with little or no change in driving
  • Electric assist reduced at times

Most likely causes

  • Measuring channel S frozen or lagging behind the other cells
  • Battery controller calibration requiring a software update
  • Block 19 or 20 out of step with the pack on two-mode NiMH batteries

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0B96 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 96: Specific fault in that system
