P0BD7 is the plausibility check for inverter temperature sensor D, GM's second sensor in the motor B inverter. After a cold soak its reading is compared with an average vehicle temperature; more than 20 °C apart sets the code, Type B, two trips, on the 2016 Volt and Type A in a 2019 table. The 2011 Volt compares with power electronics coolant and transmission temperature after 6 h off (20 °C, Type A); GM's 2012 and 2013 tables use 15 °C after 360 min, two trips. GM bulletin PIC6303A lists P0BD7 with the other inverter thermistor codes on 2016-18 Volt, Malibu, LaCrosse and Regal: alone it causes no noticeable effect, and the inverter is replaced only if P0AC4 set at the same time.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp, often after two trips
- Often no noticeable drivability change
- Further inverter temperature codes may be stored
Most likely causes
- Inverter temperature sensor D drifting out of tolerance
- Failing power inverter module
- Uneven inverter coolant flow after soak
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0BD7 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- B: Subsystem depends on the code range
- D7: Specific fault in that system
