P0BE6: Drive Motor A Phase U Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

GM uses P0BE6 as the offset check of the phase U current sensor in the motor A inverter. At every start, while no current flows, the controller learns the sensor's zero offset; if it exceeds 30 A (2011 Volt and 2016 tables, Type A; 2012 two-mode trucks, Type B) or 35 A (2019 table, Type A), the code sets. In GM's BAS Plus (eAssist) table a fault of this sensor makes current control switch to an alternate mode that does not use the current sensors. Jeep lists P0BE6 with the other phase current codes on the 2020 Renegade and Compass 1.3 PHEV for Europe, with the turtle and Service 4WD lights, and fixes it by reprogramming the hybrid control processors.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp
  • Turtle (limp home) light and Service 4WD light (Jeep)
  • Reduced electric drive power

Most likely causes

  • Hybrid control processor software (Jeep bulletin 08-056-21/08-057-21)
  • Zero offset of the phase U current sensor drifted beyond the limit
  • Faulty sensing electronics in the power inverter module

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0BE6 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • E6: Specific fault in that system
