P0BED: Drive Motor A Phase W Current Sensor Circuit

P0BED is the general circuit code of the phase W current sensor in the drive motor A inverter, for an electrical fault outside the offset, low and high categories. No manufacturer documents this exact code publicly; GM's hybrid tables from the 2011 Volt to 2019, including the BAS Plus (eAssist) system, use P0BEE, P0BEF and P0BF0 instead. CARB requires hybrid sensor circuits to be monitored. Phase W matters even on systems with only two sensors: GM's eAssist table measures U and W and, if either sensor fails, runs current control in an alternate mode without the sensors. Expect reduced motor A torque, and check for related inverter codes before replacing parts.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning and malfunction indicator lamp
  • Reduced power or assist from drive motor A

Most likely causes

  • Failed phase W current sensor inside the inverter
  • Supply or signal fault on the inverter's sensor board
  • Software fault in the motor control processor

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0BED means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • ED: Specific fault in that system
