P0C04 is the overcurrent check of drive motor B and protects the IGBTs of its inverter. GM flags it when the highest phase current exceeds 725 A on the 2011 Volt or 600 A on the 2012 two-mode trucks and in the 2016 to 2019 hybrid tables; the newer tables also fail a d-axis current below a stator-temperature curve of roughly -556 to -315 A. Fast and slow counters cover sudden and intermittent peaks, Type A, one trip. Stellantis names P0C04 with P0C01 on the 2026 Jeep Wagoneer S and Cherokee: cross-threaded or loose bolts on the three-phase cables between transmission and drive motor power inverter, checked by resistance against a 29 to 32 milliohm window. The car goes into limp mode with the MIL on.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Limp mode with red wrench or malfunction lamp
- Sudden loss of electric drive power
Most likely causes
- Cross-threaded or loose three-phase cable bolts with metal debris (Stellantis S2608000006)
- Shorted or damaged stator winding of motor B
- Failing power switch or current measurement in the motor B inverter
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0C04 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- C: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 04: Specific fault in that system
