P0C01: Drive Motor A Current High

P0C01 is the overcurrent check of drive motor A, meant to protect the inverter's IGBTs. GM sets it when any phase current exceeds 725 A on the 2011 Volt, 600 A on the 2012 two-mode trucks and in the 2016 to 2019 tables, or 396 A on eAssist; since 2016 a too negative d-axis current (about -540 to -310 A, depending on stator temperature) also counts. A fast and a slow counter catch sudden and intermittent faults; Type A, one trip. GM PIP5246 links it on Volt and ELR to a damaged motor 1 stator. Stellantis lists it on the 2018/19 Wrangler eTorque (motor generator unit) and on the 2026 Wagoneer S and Cherokee, there caused by cross-threaded three-phase cable bolts. Expect limp mode.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Limp mode with warning lamp
  • Reduced propulsion or engine unavailable message
  • Rough running or loud noise from the motor generator

Most likely causes

  • Damaged or improperly torqued three-phase cable joints (Stellantis S2608000006)
  • Damaged stator winding of motor A (GM PIP5246)
  • Outdated hybrid control software (Jeep TSB 08-144-23)
  • Failing power switch or current measurement in the inverter

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0C01 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • C: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 01: Specific fault in that system
